How do I get a blood pressure reading?

Use a recent reading from your doctor's office, a pharmacy machine or a home cuff. For the most accurate number, take a few readings at home, seated and rested, and use the average.

  1. Sit quietly for five minutes with your back supported and feet flat.
  2. Rest your arm at heart level with the cuff on bare skin.
  3. Take two or three readings a minute apart and use the average.

Our Get your numbers page lists validated home cuffs, and our Learn article explains why home readings matter.
